Picchio dal Pozzo are an Italian progressive rock band formed in Genoa in 1976. The activity of Picchio dal Pozzo has been quite erratic, with five albums published over a period of about 40 years (1976-2011). The style of the band is quite unconventional for the Italian progressive rock scene, showing influences of both Canterbury scene and jazz rock/avantgarde acts (including Soft Machine, Henry Cow, and Frank Zappa).
PICCHIO DAL POZZO are considered to be one of the very few "Canterbury" inspired bands that emerged from Italy's fertile 1970's progressive rock musical scene. The sextet known as "Picchio dal Pozzo" surges forth via romantically melodic overtones, swiftly implemented time signatures and jazzy interplay in concert with the proverbial peaks, valleys, knotty twists and circuitous turns. Camere Zimmer Rooms" is a must for all those enamoured of both Italian prog as well as the Canterbury music scene.
In this self title album, Picchio Dal Pozzo made interesting jazzy improvisations, sometimes psychedelic with a constant use of acoustic elements (flute, sax, horn) next to the rock based structure. The mood is rather melodic, relaxed, dynamic with traces of Zappa's influences for humorous, "hilarious" passages. One was PICCHIO DAL POZZO and their wonderful self-titled debut album. Italian Canterbury? For sure, I ain’t the first to tag that term on them. They released two highly regarded - and highly sought after - albums during their lifetime. The exciting release of Camere Zimmer Rooms, a previously unknown studio recording of all unreleased compositions, extends their legacy greatly! The band formed in Genoa in 1972. They released their first, self-titled album in 1975. The band recorded their second LP " Abbiamo Tutti i Suoi Problemi" in 1980

Picchio dal Pozzo can be considered as the definitive 'Canterbury' inspired band, coming from Italy's 1970's progressive rock scene. Their 1976 debut album shows an incredibly rich sound texture, made out of some peculiar musical ingredients. Oblique tunes and liquid harmonies, airy flutes, crispy horns, loads of electric piano, fuzz bass, drops of jazz, pop romanticism, waves of minimalism, and pataphysical vocals and lyrics. The whole album develops through a sequence of finely composed material and wide open sound choices.
