Stardust is the twenty-second studio album by Willie Nelson, released in 1978. Nelson asked Booker T. Jones, who was his neighbor in Malibu at the time, to arrange a version of "Moonlight in Vermont". Impressed with Jones's work, Nelson asked him to produce the entire album

Willie Nelson, singer, learned his offbeat phrasing from urbane songs like these, where it still shows off best. Refusing to be hurried by the band, he strolls through All of Me and Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, as wry and debonair as the lyrics. But Stardust is more than a personal history or testimonial. For all the sleek sophistication of the material, Stardust is as down-home as the Legion dance. Heard coast to coast in lounges and on elevator soundtracks, these tunes have become part of the folk music of exurban America. And that’s the way Nelson plays them - spare and simple, with a jump band’s verve and a storyteller’s love of a good tale. By offering these songs, he’s displaying the tools of a journeyman musician’s trade - worn smooth and polished by constant use - and when he lays them out this way, they kind of look like works of art.

Stardust puts the spotlight completely on Willie Nelson the interpreter. An album full of pop standards-such as Georgia on My Mind, Unchained Melody and Moonlight in Vermont -Stardust wasn’t popular among Columbia executives, who thought it ran counter to what Nelson’s fans wanted to hear. After all, what screams outlaw less than recording an album full of well-known pop songs?) Ultimately, though, Nelson was right: Stardust went platinum and ended up being one of the most singular and beloved albums in his catalog. After Waylon & Willie in 1978, Nelson caught the bug for collaborative projects.

At the height of outlaw country, Willie Nelson pulled off perhaps the riskiest move of the entire bunch. He set aside originals, country, and folk and recorded Stardust, a collection of pop standards produced by Booker T. Well, it's not entirely accurate to say that he put away country and folk, since these are highly idiosyncratic interpretations of "Georgia on My Mind," "All of Me," "Moonlight in Vermont," and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," blending pop, country, jazz, and folk in equal measures.

Willie Nelson Lyrics. Sometimes I wonder why I spend The lonely night dreaming of a song The melody haunts my reverie And I am once again with you When our love was new And each kiss an inspiration But that was long ago And now my consolation Is in the stardust of a song.

Entertainer Willie Nelson described this deceptively simple album as a tribute to "the music I heard growing u. Tunes like the title track, "Georgia on My Mind," "Blue Skies" and "Someone to Watch Over Me" are indeed testimonials to the best of pre-rock and roll, "songbook" era pop music. Even better, Nelson knows how to sell things songs with his plaintive voice, assisted by just a handful of instrumentalists. I think everyone interested in pop music or Americana should own this album. I had forgotten how magical Willie Nelson's voice worked with these superb arrangements of classic pop and torch songs on Stardust. I hadn't heard the album in, perhaps, 20 years and it knocked me out even more than before. My current wife, who had never heard this album, loves it as well. this is NOT Willie Nelson the country music star.
