The Rescue is the fourth studio album by American post-rock band Explosions in the Sky. Written, recorded and mastered in two weeks in band member Michael James's house in Austin, Texas, The Rescue is a concept album inspired by an experience the band had while touring. The album was recorded and mixed in just two weeks. The band wrote no new material for this album prior, and then spent eight straight days writing and finishing a song each day. For The Rescue, Explosions in the Sky recorded eight songs in eight days, creating a slightly disconnected affair, with the band in an atypically casual, carefree mood. Freeing themselves from the constraints of a normal cohesive thematic unit, they branch out, experimenting with new instruments, voices, and moods.

EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY have become one of the most recognized bands in the post-rock movement. Like most bands within their style, their music is slow and epic (despite also featuring a distinctly more upbeat feel than GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR or MOGWAI). Although 2001's "Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever" gained them some attention, 2003's "Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place" was a breakthrough of sorts, increasing their popularity quite considerably.

Munaf Rayani, Mark Smith, and Michael James had just moved to Austin from Midland, Texas, and drummer Chris Hrasky had just moved to Austin from Rockford, Illinois. Eventually they became one of the genre's most commercially successful bands, scoring several motion pictures and being featured in countless other films, television series, and video games. The quartet of Texas kids, made up of Mark Smith and Munaf Rayani on guitars, Michael James on bass, and Christopher Hrasky on drums, was signed for its first release on Temporary Residence Limited after half-a-listen to the foursome's 2000 CD-R How Strange, Innocence, which was submitted by the American Analog Set with a brief note saying "This totally.
