Samuel Blaser Quartet – 7th Heaven. Label: Between The Lines – BTLCHR 71217. Recorded by Radio Suisse Romande on November 15th, 2006 at Studio 15 - Maison de la Radio, Lausanne, Switzerland.
An unusual combination of instruments is heard on 7th Heaven, which is Samuel Blaser's first album as a leader and finds the Swiss jazz trombonist forming a pianoless quartet with guitarist Scott Dubois, acoustic bassist Thomas Morgan, and drummer Gerald Cleaver. That /drums combination is hardly common in jazz, but it is a combination that works well for Blaser on a very cerebral album that is relevant to both post-bop and avant-garde jazz.

Samuel Blaser Quartet: 7th Heaven by Terrell Kent Holmes, published on July 17, 2008. Samuel Blaser writes and plays daringly on his debut as a leader, blending free jazz sensibilities with a straight-ahead approach. And if a trombone ever flourished in a free jazz vein, it's here. Sans Titre," with its faux military theme, sets the tone as Blaser and guitarist Scott Dubois march side by side. Blaser's effective use of multiphonics on the title cut makes it sound like he's accompanying himself or being overdubbed. And Dubois, whose style and timbre are reminiscent of Pat Metheny, plays deft, flowing lines here and throughout the disc.
Samuel Blaser (20 July 1981 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) is a Swiss trombonist and composer. Blaser lived in New York for several years, before he settled in Berlin. He worked increasingly on his projects like Consort in Motion, which is a mixture of jazz inscription with Renaissance and Baroque music and was performed in trio with the double bass player Thomas Morgan and the percussionist Paul Motian.
