Belgian brutal death mob Aborted have crafted a solid career out of reliably brutal, precise death metal. Their last release, ‘Slaughter and Apparatus’ was well received and, while not quite as good as earlier devastations like ‘Goremageddon’ or ‘The Purity of Perversions’, was still a cracking death metal release. However, with ‘Strychnine. 213’, fans of the band will noticed a marked increase in melodic leads and a lack of the goregrind attackthat punctuated their earlier material. However it is important to look at the album subjectively as well as objectively. As a solid technical death album, ‘Strychnine. 213’ is an impressive piece. It still contains brutal breakdowns, although is now punctuated by fluid melodic breaks (like the many that break through Pestiferous Subterfuge), and excellent moments of technicality that doesn’t become too head spinning.

213" Aborted showed us a lot of courage. The courage to do something new. Apparently, there are plenty things in common with their previous works, but at the same time there are many new elements, which were hard to expect. There's a difference between recording once again similar sounding album and taking up the challenge, and entering new, so far unexplored territories. I do not claim Aborted copied themselves on their previous albums, but the fact is - even though the systematic improvement of their style - their albums were more or less predictable. You can blame Aborted for getting a bit relented on this album, you can. But your complaint will be groundless, as musically it is still brutal and powerful, though accompanied by a melody. So what? If you don't like it, you can switch to ultra brutal releases from Unmatched Brutality or Bones Brigade.
213 is Aborted fifth studio album, and not a smidgen less gruesome than its predecessors. But can it hold up its own blood". Opening with a dark intro known as Carrion, Strychnine. 213 wastes no time in getting the guitar in there. While most openers are just white noise, Carrion is made up of guitars and unintelligible muttering. Interesting enough, I suppose. But now things get really good.
Think of it this way: Strychnine. 213 is the musical equivalent of a goofy B-movie horror/slasher flick, but a goofy B-movie horror/slasher flick that has decent production values and doesn't go out of its way to appear low-budget. This 39-minute CD was not recorded with grindcore purists in mind; anyone who fancies himself/herself a grindcore purist should stick to early-'90s discs such as Cannibal Corpse's Butchered at Birth and Carcass' Symphonies of Sickness.
