Green Light is the eighth album by Bonnie Raitt, released in 1982. What I wanted this time out was a combination of the music I've been listening to recently," Raitt said in 1982, "Billy Burnette, the Blasters, Rockpile, and the rock-a-billy New Wave scene. I was a little stung by the lack of response to The Glow. And I was disappointed by not being able to make a record that sounded the way I wanted it to sound.
This bothered many listeners, who chose to concentrate on the surface instead of the substance, but Raitt retained many of the same special qualities she demonstrated on those records into the '80s - namely, her excellent taste in material, fondness for blurring folk, blues, country, and rock, and her wonderfully subtle, always engaging, interpretations. Green Lights may suffer a bit from a production that clearly pegs it as a 1982 release, but strip away its production and it's yet another satisfying collection of roots-rockers and bluesy ballads from the always reliable Raitt.

Raitt claims this album was an attempt to get back to her roots, and was surprised when critics labeled it as an attempt to go New Wave. The funny thing to me is that she would see this as going back to her roots. This album sounds NOTHING like any of her early work, and songs like "Me and the Boys" could have been included on the soundtrack to "Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Any old time You got your tuned in Baby by your side And your pretty little cool ride It feels so good You got the top pulled in Wind in your hair Destination you don't care. Now move it on up You know it's steerin' all rite Foot's to the floor But you think that you can do more Wind shield clean And the nite is so brite Baby so near And She's givin' you a green lite
The good news first: Bonnie Raitt plays more guitar on Green Light than on any album in years, the band boasts a live feel that makes the rock & roll cuts really kick, and the record contains one of Raitt’s very best performances. Eric Kaz’ River of Tears begins with a majestic, rolling hook uncannily reminiscent of the Rolling Stones’ Tumbling Dice, while the lovelorn lyrics stir Raitt’s singing to a passionate yearning. She’s joined on the choruses by Richard Manuel’s urgent harmonies, and her own spicy slide-guitar playing adds snap.
