Jule Styne (/ˈdʒuːli staɪn/; born Julius Kerwin Stein, December 31, 1905 – September 20, 1994) was a British-American song writer and composer known for a series of Broadway musicals, which include several famous and frequently revived shows which also became successful films, including Gypsy, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and Funny Girl. Styne was born to a Jewish family in London, England to immigrants from Ukraine, the Russian Empire who ran a small grocery
Songwriter Jule Styne had a long and successful career that did not end in 1954, when he was 48 years old. In fact, he lived another 40 years after that and spent much of that time composing. Styne and Cahn were the songwriters of choice for Frank Sinatra in the '40s, and they were particularly adept at coming up with songs of romantic longing that took the separations of World War II as their context, songs like "I'll Walk Alone," "It's Been a Long, Long Time," and "I'm Glad I Waited for Yo. "I Don't Want to Walk Without You," which Styne wrote with Frank Loesser before hooking up with Cahn, also fits into this category.

He studied piano with a teacher from the London Conservatory of Music starting in 1911. His family emigrated to America in 1913 to Chicago, Illinois. He studied piano and composition at the Chicago College of Music, and began playing with the Chicago, Detroit, and St. Louis Symphonies at 12, but his small hands and a childhood injury precluded a career in playing.
