Breakout" is a single from British act Swing Out Sister's debut album It's Better to Travel. The single reached the number four position in the UK in the autumn of 1986, and rose to number six on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and number one on the Adult Contemporary in the US in 1987. The song also resulted in a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.

Breakout is a compilation album by English pop group Swing Out Sister in 2001. Although the album does feature many of the band's singles, it also includes album-only tracks and B-sides. Swing Out Sister are an English pop group best known worldwide for the 1986 song "Breakout". Other hits include "Surrender", "Twilight World", "Waiting Game" and a remake of the Eugene Record soul composition "Am I the Same Girl?". Although Swing Out Sister are currently a duo, they began as a trio in the UK. The group was formed by Andy Connell (keyboards) and Martin Jackson (drums); they were later joined by Corinne Drewery (vocals).

Swing Out Sister might just be ready for a new Breakout. That breezy piece of British pop became their signature when it wafted into the top 10 of the Hot 100 in 1987, having done the same in the . late the previous year. It announced a debut album, It's Better To Travel, which hit No. 1 at home and was certified gold in the . To complete the time capsule, their fellow shortlisters included Cutting Crew, Breakfast Club and Terence Trent D'Arby, who all lost out to Jody Watley. It's a musical lifetime.

Swing Out Sister was formed in 1985 in Manchester, England by keyboardist Andy Connell (who used to be in a Certain Ratio) and drummer Martin Jackson (formerly of Magazine). They were joined by singer Corinne Drewery, who was previously a fashion designer. They got themselves a two-single deal, and the first one was "Blue Mood. This was to be Swing Out Sister's biggest hit in the UK and US and after a few years their career tailed off in those territories. However in Japan the band have proved very popular.
