If you’re in the mood Lord Of Lords is an amazing listen, full of high drama or calming spirituality, but be warned this really is nothing like what she has done before. The nearest comparison would be her phenomenal World Galaxy album, but that still had elements of jazz to it, whereas this album really is only orchestral and contains none of the snaky jazzy rhythms of that previous album. Probably not an album you’d chuck on just for something to listen to, but when has Alice Coltrane ever made an album so lightweight as to just be a chuck-on album. Alice Coltrane’s newly reissued Lord of Lords capped off a trio of richly orchestral albums in the early ’70s. It is a slow-building, cosmic, unnerving throbbing organism of sound. Most artists who devote themselves even fleetingly to religious music don’t do it well enough to earn many converts. But Alice Coltrane ’s devotional music-particularly World Spirituality Classics 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, released last year, a decade after her death-now earns more plaudits than the string of albums she recorded in quick succession for the Impulse! label in the late 1960s and early ’70s, just before she foreswore secular life, moved to California and. established an ashram in the Santa Monica Mountains. The last of those albums, 1972’s Lord of Lords, is now being reissued on vinyl by Superior Viaduct and it may be the most ecstatic record she made.

Theoretically, the present album should’ve been a trio consisting of Alice, bassist Haden and drummer Riley, but in reality, this is much more a total symphonic experience, rather than a jazz-trio thing.

Lord Of Lords may be difficult to find in America. But if you do find this one, it is worth every penny to pay the expensive "import" price. 11 people found this helpful. Alice Coltrane's "Lord of Lords", her last album for Impulse!, finds her expanding on the ideas of the previous album- setting her music into an orchestral setting. Coltrane (performing on organ, piano and harp), is joined by bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Ben Riley, and a sixteen piece string orchestra. The resulting album is unique. One thing that's common throughout is this extraordinarily heightened sense of melodrama- the strings highlight this aspect of Coltrane's work so much that for me, the heavy handed arrangements often get in the way of the music itself.

Universal Consciousness/Lord of Lords. The former album features bassist Jimmy Garrison on four of its six tracks, and drummer Jack DeJohnette on three. Rashied Ali assists on two others; Clifford Jarvis plays with DeJohnette on "Hare Krishna" and holds down the kit himself on "Sita Ra. Coltrane plays organ and harp on both recordings, and adds her piano and percussion to the mix on Lord of Lords. Even with World Galaxy missing form this trilogy, the listener gets the picture.
