Thing of the Past is the third studio album by Andy Cabic's San-Francisco-based band Vetiver. The basic tracks, including all the guitars, drums, bass and some of the vocals, were recorded live in studio.

Vetiver has been criticized for wearing their influences too comfortably, and Thing of the Past seems like not an effort to combat those criticisms, but to embrace them. It’s as if Oasis, two albums into their career, had released an album of Beatles songs. This is the subtext to the release of any covers album, no matter how well executed, that cannot be shaken off. Pop singers may do it all the time, but when a rock band, especially one as unproven as Vetiver, blows an album’s worth of studio time to sing other people’s songs, they are begging you not to take it seriously. The album, indeed, is all about thoughts, and the emotions behind them, more than it’s about tangible things; these songs float just outside of what we might easily summarize. And yet the feelings and impressions being described in the songs are quite real, and recognizable, becoming more poignant with each listen.

Thing Of The Past covers many different songs from a golden era of American music, folk, country, pop and blues of the 60s and 70s all feature on this album, and indeed throughout Vetiver’s self-penned work. It is easy to scoff and call cover albums vanity projects, but it is as easy to love them for that same reason, you want to hear what the band like and how they are influenced, it’s always interesting, and at best an eye-opening experience. Opening track ‘Houses’ has the loose feel of much of Vetiver’s work; slight soporific vocals, strummed acoustic, crisp drums and a recording.
