After exiting his pioneering soul group the Impressions, in 1970 Curtis Mayfield formed Curtom Records, which alongside labels like Cadet and Brunswick set the pace for Chicago soul during the early '70s. Marrying a mellow, sophisticated production aesthetic with a street-smart but poignant lyrical outlook that raised the bar for social criticism in popular music, Curtom's output anticipated not only the lush arrangements of Philly soul and disco but also the eye-opening urban poetry of hip-hop

Curtom Studios, Chicago, Illinois. Back to the World is a 1973 studio album by Curtis Mayfield Contents.

Double CD focusing on Chicago soul giant's work with friends and disciples. The generosity of spirit that runs through Curtis Mayfield’s solo work helped fuel a parallel career as soul auteur. With the similarly gospel-bred, independent-minded Sam Cooke as role model, Mayfield formed Curtom as a publishing company in 1963. Despite financial problems as a label, Curtom’s broad church embraced The Impressions-era close harmonies of The Five Stairsteps And Cubie and The Fascinations, the 1979 material girl manifesto of Linda Clifford’s Don’t Give It Up and latter-day offerings from former associates Fred Wesley and Mavis Staples.

The Curtom Story: We're A Winner. Curtom Story by Curtom Story (2006-11-21). Give It Up: the Best of the Curtom Years 1970-1977. Format: Audio CDVerified Purchase. Sweet soul music is the deal on the disc. All of the tracks are true examples of sweet soul music, and sound good-crisp and clean. This album is amazing. It's like discovering a long-lost wavelength from a Chicago radio station flickering through their late 60s to early 80s playlists-soulful R&B, hook-laden harmonizing girl and boy groups, expert Motown-styled knockoffs, disco hooks supreme, and of course the uniquely funky guitar grooves of Chicago's Curtis Mayfield at his peak.
