For the Berliner Philharmoniker, Schumann's symphonies have always been part of their core. For Simon Rattle, Robert Schumann is the echt Romantic. 1 in B flat major, op. 38 Spring I. Andante un poco maestoso – Allegro molto vivace II. Larghetto – III. Scherzo IV. Allegro animato e grazioso.

Berliner Philharmoniker. Daniel Barenboim conductor. Maria João Pires piano (replacing Radu Lupu). 95 in C minor. Ludwig van Beethoven. Robert Schumann’s Fourth Symphony is on the programme after the interval, a work which did not achieve the hoped-for success at its premiere in Leipzig on 6 December 1841. Schumann set the symphony aside for almost exactly ten years, then revised it so substantially in December 1851 that a new score became necessary.

Mendelssohn lost or mislaid. Mendelssohn also revived interest in the music of Franz Schubert  . Other prominent musicians, including the string players Ferdinand David and Joseph Joachim and the music theorist Moritz Hauptmann, also became staff members

By mid-March the Italian Symphony was drafted, and several incidental pieces for a production of Calderón's El príncipe constante were dispatched to Immermann. After a short visit to Düsseldorf, Mendelssohn arrived in London on 25 April. With Moscheles he concocted and performed a set of variations on the Gypsy March from Weber's Preciosa. von Wasielewski: ‘Felix y und Robert Schumann: eine künstlerische Parallele mit Einflechtung persönlicher Erinnerungen’, Deutsche Revue, 19/3 (1894), 329–41. Berliner rt von Karajan. Schumann Symphonies 1-4: If you were introduced to Schumann's chimerical muse through Bernstein's classic set of the four symphonies, Karajan may strike you as too level-headed, even stuffy. He certainly doesn't convey the manic-depressive qualities in Schumann's music as effectively as Bernstein. On the other hand, Karajan does convey a breadth and almost Brucknerian majesty in no. 2 that is quite unique. Mendelssohn Symphonies 1-5: A surprise, perhaps, that Karajan should prove such a sympathetic Mendelssohn interpreter, but so it is. This is, in my estimation, the most involving Mendelssohn cycle ever recorded; it easily surpasses Abbado, Dohnanyi, and Sawallisch (among those cycles with which I am familiar). Karajan evokes playing from the BPO that is little short of glorious in all five symphonies.
