Essex is the fourth studio album by British singer-songwriter Alison Moyet. The album, named after the artist's native Essex, England, was released in 1994, reached No. 24 in the UK and includes the singles "Falling", "Whispering Your Name", "Getting into Something" and "Ode to Boy". Having demanded greater artistic freedom from her record company, Moyet was left to record her third album Hoodoo without input from the label
Geneviève Alison Jane Moyet (/ˈmɒjeɪ/ MOY-ay; born 18 June 1961) is an English singer, songwriter and performer noted for her powerful bluesy contralto voice. She came to prominence as half of the duo Yazoo (also known as Yaz), but has since mainly worked as a solo artist. Her worldwide album sales have reached a certified 23 million, with over 2 million singles sold.
Musically, the album veers from the Revolver-era Beatles sound of the second single, "Falling," to the Motown rhythm of "So Am I" and an unnecessary remake of Yaz's "Ode to Boy" arranged to sound like "Pinball Wizard. The best song, the Glenister-produced ballad "Satellite," is buried in the middle of the record - what makes it the best is that the arrangement actually allows Moyet the space to sing and to be as moving as she can be.

Essex. h the paradox of the guilty pleasures. While I must confess that I find ALISON MOYET’s fourth album pleasing compared to her previous work, eve. he word is not authentic, but more like an attempt to take control and present herself as she is, it fails to convince me, becoming but a mere collection of clichés and commonplaces that the more I listen, the more I get unamused.
