XXV: The Essential is a compilation album written and mostly performed by Mike Oldfield and released in 1997. The Roman numerals XXV are to represent that this is a compilation pieces of the first 25 years of Oldfield's work. The 14-track album features songs from the first 25 years of Oldfield's career, when he was on the Virgin Records and Warner Music labels.

The compilation concentrates on Oldfield's early album releases, his two re-workings under the "Tubular Bells" banner, his excellent "Songs of distant earth", and the more recent "Voyager" album. Many of his other albums are therefore absent altogether, and his singles output is largely ignored too (although space is found for "Portsmouth" and the superb "Moonlight shadow").

The full title is 'XXV: The Essential Mike Oldfield'. the man in the shadows" - June 10, 2000. Every track is beautiful, but it's really a shame that Mike's longer 'symphonies' (. Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge et. had to be crippled to fit on one CD. At least it gives you an impression of what they sound like if you've never haerd them before.

Crises is the eighth record album by Mike Oldfield, released in 1983 on Virgin Records. Oldfield's well known hits "Moonlight Shadow" and "Shadow on the Wall" appear on the album. The title track of the album is a twenty-minute-long piece, featuring a small amount of vocals, sung by Oldfield. The beginning and end of the track are driven by a synthesised lead passage, stylistically similar to the opening theme to Oldfield's Tubular Bells.
