Los Van Van is the most recognized post-revolution Cuban musical group, led for many years by bassist Juan Formell until his death in 2014. Formell and former band members Changuito and Pupy are some of the most important figures in contemporary Cuban music. In 1967, Formell became musical director of Elio Reve's charanga orchestra. The sound of Orquesta Revé at that time was a unique blend of Cuban son and late 60s rock

I saw Van Van perform in New York last December. Fantastic-Mario Rivera! Alas, Juan Formell was not with them because he was denied a visa. Vanessa Formell guests on "Un Tumbao pa los dos" and just like with Diego "El Cigala" in the Chapeando album, they match is truly made in heaven. However, just like "El Cigala" don't expect Vanessa to play by the vocalization rules of timba, she dwelves deep into pop territory. LVV is not known for deep vocals, but in this album they were a bit too corny for me. In "La Rumba No" it is hard to take Mayito seriously complaining about only having guiro, flute, and guitar. In fact, I didn't know what his complaint referred to at all.

Juan Formell Y Los Van Van bring together salsa and their original songo sound on the 2009 release, ARRASANDO. Formell and company also feature guest vocalists this time, including Ruben Blades and even the leader's daughter Vanessa on the track "Un Tumbao Pá Los Dos," which gives the album a pop feeling despite the classic Latin orientation of the band. And songs like "Mi Songo" and"Arrasando" lend a distinctly modern flair to an artist who's been around since pre-Castro Cuba.

Los Van Van has been a school for outstanding singers and musicians. Juan Formell contributed countless innovations to the Cuban bass and clave, which paved the way for a radical reconceptualisation of rhythmic arrangements in Cuban music. The Van Van sound came to be known as songo (based on the son rhythm, and still keeping its syncopation), which laid the base for the later development of timba. Past members with successful careers as solo artists include Pedro Calvo, Angel Bonne, Changuito, Cesar Pupy Pedroso, Mayito Rivera and others
