Exclusive Prime pricing. Lawes: Fantasia-Suites for Two Violins, Bass Viol & Organ. Lawes also wrote fantasia suites for one violin with bass viol and organ, and he also wrote many other consort pieces, some featuring viols, some featuring a harp, and others an organ. He was a great composer, and I would particularly recommend his Harp consorts.

London Baroque continues to give vital and enriching performances with all the technical perfection and musical maturity their public has come to expect. They have performed in most of the major European festivals, appeared frequently on TV and radio the world over, and tour regularly in Japan and the USA. Their repertoire spans a period from the end of the sixteenth century up to Mozart and Haydn with works of virtually unknown composers next to familiar masterpieces of the baroque and early classical eras.

William Lawes Composer. Purcell Qt. Author: Guest. Lawes Fantasia Suites. Richard Boothby and Robert Woolley are well known for their performances of early viol and harpsichord music. As a member of Fretwork, Boothby has already recorded music by Lawes (6/88 and 8/91). The Purcell Quartet is generally known for its performances of later baroque music, although it has clearly sought to popularize lesser known antecedents. However much one may muse about the probable original circumstances of this music, thoughtful performances as different as these by the Purcell Quartet and London Baroque serve to remind us of the power of the interpreter.

Lawes spent all his adult life in Charles's employ. He composed secular music and songs for court masques (and doubtless played in them), as well as sacred anthems and motets for Charles's private worship. He is most remembered today for his sublime viol consort suites for between three and six players and his lyra viol music. London Baroque; Harmonia Mundi HMA 1901493; 1994.
