Album · 2002 · 10 Songs. More By J Mascis + The Fog. See All. Live At Maxwell's 11/18/2004.

Free So Free' isn't a great album. Its not exactly bad either, just kind of middling. J Mascis hasn't really created a great set of songs since 'Green Mind' or maybe 'Where You Been?' both with his band Dinosaur Jr. This set of song isn't really all the different from where he left off with that band of his last album as J Mascis & the Fog. Imagine Neil Young only more of a slacker and virtually none of the anger. When I heard J. Mascis had released a second album with his new project, the Fog, I was elated to say the least. The Fog's initial effort, 2000's "More Light," was fantastic and confirmed my membership in the life-long Dinosaur Jr. and J. Mascis fan club. I saw J play tracks from "More Light" live in Houston and it only confirmed how strong the songs were and how much I can't seem to get enough of J's guitar work. Unfortunately, that's not been the case with "Free so Free.

Free So Free is a reminder of how far J Mascis has come since ridiculous Hardcore of Dead Wound, and how almost two decades after Dinosaur Jr’s first release he still can write great songs that convey his emotions brilliantly. While Mascis will never reach the heights he reached on Dinosaur Jr’s You’re Living All Over Me or the equally good Bug, Free So Free is a great release that will please most long time Dino fans. Standout Tracks: Say The Word Freedom Everybody Lets Me Down Free So Free.

J Mascis + The Fog was formed by J Mascis after the break up of Dinosaur Jr. The project released two albums; 2000's More Light and 2002's Free So Free. After fulfilling his contractual obligations to Blanco y Negro in the UK and Sire/Reprise in the US, Mascis holed up in his home studio in Amherst, MA, which he named Bob's Place after his pet bulldog.
