Michele Campanella, b. 1947, recorded these works in 1971-73 so it is a young man’s cycle. Individual works were recorded in The Netherlands in two separate sessions and in Switzerland and, from these, the recording engineers have created a seamless cycle. The Philips transfer is bright and forthright. The collection of the Hungarian Rhapsodies on two CDs, tts 7. 4 (1-9) and 6. 0 (10-19), is very attractive, the set being very well recorded and Campanella’s fingerwork is meticulous and shows subtlety and finesse. The significant downside is a lack of passion and risk that limits the listener’s excitement levels.
