The Popular Duke Ellington is a studio album by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington featuring many of the tunes associated with his orchestra rerecorded in 1966 and released on the RCA label in 1967. But Ellington fans will enjoy this well-played effort". All compositions by Duke Ellington except as indicated.
As with other prime Ellington soloists like Johnny Hodges and Harry Carney, Gonsalves was given ample room to display his wares live and in the studio. Duke's faith in Gonsalves was certainly made clear at Newport and is proven again on this very enjoyable showcase. Unbeknownst to Gonsalves, though, Ellington planned the session as a vehicle for his soloist's considerable skills. Recorded in May of 1962, the eight-song set was cut in about four hours. The resulting album has both an informal feel and the qualities of a laboriously planned recording.
Prior to Newport, Duke Ellington's band had been in a creative and commercial downturn-so there was little buildup to this set. Now part of jazz lore, it’s immortalized for the riot-inducing 27-chorus solo by tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves on Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue (where Ellington can be heard urging him on as the crowd erupts) and several other tracks that fed off the crowd’s energy, particularly Skin Deep and a stompin’ Jeep’s Blues. It's the recording that made Ellington the beloved elder statesman we know him as today
