Sinfonie Nr. 2 (C Minor, Original Version 1872). 1. I. Allegro: Ziemlich schnell.

From 2007 to 2015, Oehms Classics released a critically praised series of hybrid SACDs of the 11 symphonies of Anton Bruckner, performed by Simone Young and the Hamburg Philharmonic during her tenure as chief conductor of that orchestra. The cycle was reissued in 2017 on conventional CDs in a 12-disc box set, at last bringing the recordings together in one affordable package. Young is among a small group of conductors who favor the original or Urfassung versions of Bruckner's symphonies, on the theory that Bruckner intended them to stand as the official versions of his works, despite his.

As of 2015, Kent Nagano has been General Music Director () and chief conductor (Chefdirigent). The Philharmoniker Hamburg also serves as the orchestra of the Hamburg State Opera. The Hamburg Philharmonic is one of three major orchestras in Hamburg, the others being the Hamburger Symphoniker and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra.

imone Young’s Hamburg Bruckner project has been received by professional journalists with great interest and thoroughly positive response. The principle behind this series is presenting the respective fi rst version of Bruckner’s works. The symphony in E-flat major, written in 1874, marks the peak of Bruckner’s creative period that lasted from 1872 to 1875; and is one of the most popular symphonies in music history. However, at the same time, the uncounted modifications and improvements the Maestro added almost manically also added up to previously unimaginable changes.

1 Simone Young’s Bruckner cycle has now been released as a box set: Anton Bruckner, Sämtliche Sinfonien, Hamburg, Philharmoniker, Young, Simone cond (Oehms Classics 26, 2016). 2 John F. Berky, ‘Symphony No. 6 in A Major’, Abruckner. 3 The work’s date has provoked debate. Paul Hawkshaw maintains that it dates from 1869, a view corroborated by numerous features of the sources and the composers letters; see ‘The Date of Bruckner’s Nullified Symphony in D minor’, 19 th -Century Music 6/3 (1983): 252–63.
