Kerouac kicks joy darkness begins with an original piece of bop poetry by Morphine entitled Kerouac, moves on to Lydia Lunch as she spits out her rendition of "Bowery Blues" and then finds Michael Stipe, backed by the wheezy, cheezy sound of a Vox Jaguar Organ, rumbling out his version of Jack's pome, "My Gang. Spoken word artist Maggie Estep enlisted the lower eastside group, The Spitters, to rip out a wrenching "Skid Row Wine - probably the most in-your-face performance on the album
Kerouac: Kicks Joy Darkness is a 1997 spoken word tribute album featuring late Beat Generation writer Jack Kerouac's work performed by various artists. Notable performers include: Michael Stipe, Allen Ginsberg, Hunter S. Thompson, Johnny Depp, and Patti Smith. Ginsberg's performance of "The Brooklyn Bridge Blues" is missing the final tenth chorus. This was due to a faxing machine error which stuck the last pages together when Ginsberg was faxed the lyrics.
Kerouac: Kicks Joy Darkness. Jack Kerouac was born Jean-Louis Lebris de Kerouac on March 12, 1922, in Lowell, Massachusetts. Jack Kerouac's writing career began in the 1940s, but didn't meet with commercial success until 1957, when On the Road was published. The book became an American classic that defined the Beat Generation.
