Deep Six is a compilation album featuring six Seattle-based alternative rock bands and was released in 1986. It was the very first release by C/Z Records with a catalogue number of CZ01 for 2,000 copies. The album was reissued as a joint C/Z Records/A&M Records release on April 5, 1994. The album was compiled by Seattle locals Chris Hanzsek and Tina Casale of CZ Records to showcase what was going on in the Seattle rock community at this time by drawing on the talents of six like-minded bands

This version contains Dillinja's 'City of Lights' - an absolutely slamming techstep tune in the classic Blue Note style. This was exclusive to the Japanese release and was never released anywhere else, which is a great shame because it is one of his greatest tunes (in my opinion at least).
how to sound fresh 20 years later, step forward Free Hand's timeless 'Glide', Justice with the Drexciyan 'Aquisse' Wax Doctor's excellent Model 500 remix, and Tony Justice with 'Feverish'.A lot of quality on this release, and it's cheap!
Wonderful dnb sounds for a cheap buck.Pull the trigger!
Such a formidable lp of old skool jazzy dnb it's difficult to know where to start!Yes it sounds very 90's and some of the jazziness becomes a little too much at times, but at least the artists are trying to make music rather than noise. Many of the tracks and remixes are exclusive to this compilation, and it's great to hear artists such as Wax Doctor, Alex Reece, Dj Pulse (so underrated!) and Lemon D all on top form.I was going to give a list of the highlights but it's almost impossible to single out individual tracks on here - just add it to your collection...
^you are right it's hard to pick a favourite. My most loved side is side D with TMF's etheric "5 Miles High", followed by the intense "No-One In The World" by Locust. I used to play this a lot on my radio show.
I'll second that! I've been looking for the bulk of these tunes for ever- finally found them.
My fav on here is Detroit. 1995 was really about intelligent Drum and bass with Metalheadz and Moving Shadow both putting out some magic. If you like this then also try the 'Storm from the East' comps on Moving Shadow.
I first heard Lemon D - Solaar System on the radio around the time this album came out but didn't know what it was until I bought the album recently. Its a fantastic Metalheadz style fusion of funk jazz and heavyweight DnB.
It wasn't house, it wasn't techno, it wasn't electro... it was something totally different! Probably my own first encounter with Drum'n'Bass... This music totally blew me away at the time, because it seemed so hectic and pumping yet at the same time also calm and soothing. I can agree about the Locust-track being the best one but the general level of quality is pretty high. Nearly all the tracks are highly enjoyable and most remixes here are totally new tracks, using only very few elements of the original. The best example is probably Alex Reese's version of Kenny Larkin's "Loop 2" The main ingredient in those days was JAZZ: lots of saxophones, trumpets, big bass sounds, drum-patterns, loops, and samples. Those sounds give the music even more class and have nothing to do with the aggressive dancefloor madness that was still to come later on. That's probably why I used to make love to this with my first real girlfriend... To me this stuff doesn't sound the least bit dated, even after more than 10 years. Together with Goldie's "Timeless" and Aphrodite's 1st album, one of my most cherished d&b-cds!
This is a reasonable compilation of nice, mostly downtempo and jazzy, drum & bass. The best track here is easily the remix of Locust's No-One in the World (labelled as the DJB mix on the singles) which uses a deep brooding intro, sweet female vocal line, simple poignant riff and interesting percussion to create a moving and entrancing tune. Sadly this album marked the rather sudden demise of R&S's famous In Order to Dance series; in fact even the full concept of the sixth instalment wasn't fully realized. The 2CD compilation listed above was sub-titled "Session 1", the idea being that a subsequent Session 2 album would cover the usual IOtD techno selection while Session 3 would feature demos received by the label. There were even plans for a "limited edition luxury record case" and a multimedia CDROM about the label and its artists ...but sadly, as far as I know, only Session 1 was ever released.
