Working Man: A Tribute to Rush is a tribute album to progressive rock band Rush recorded by various artists and released on Magna Carta Records in 1996 (see 1996 in music). The album was mixed by original Rush producer Terry Brown at Town Music Studios in Toronto, Canada. Mike Portnoy was the main creative consultant. Several prominent musicians from the genres of hard rock, progressive rock, heavy metal, progressive metal and extreme metal were a part of this project.
While the pedal steel would be the obvious choice for a tribute to a country musician, instrumentals like "Why Ain't I Runnin'" and "Shameless," dominated by Jesse Harris' pedal steel, actually seem more country than the originals. Others, like "Papa Loved Mama" and "Beer Run," veer closer to Southern rock by adding a healthy dose of slide guitar.
You'll take my life but I'll take yours too You'll fire your musket but I'll run you through So when you're waiting for the next attack You'd better stand there's no turning back The bugle sounds the charge begins But on this battlefield no one wins The smell of acrid smoke and horse's. breath As I plunge on into certain death. The poem was written 6 weeks after the event, reaching the British troops still fighting in the Crimean War (1853-1856), where it became a inspiring tribute. The song was the second single released from Piece of Mind, and at the time was famous for its MTV banned music video, which depicted scenes from the 1936 Errol Flynn movie, in which actual horses died. The song itself has since inspired Iron Maiden’s own beer: And the Eddie from the single cover is even stamped on the arm of the song’s composer, Steve Harris.
David Bowie's vocal performance on this song was produced by placing three microphones at different distances away from him: 9 inches, 20 feet and 50 feet. The first was turned on for the quieter vocals, the second on the louder passages, and all three on the loudest parts. The guitar part on this track was played by Robert Fripp (King Crimson). Brian Eno (Roxy Music) helped David Bowie write and produce this song as well as his albums "Low", "Heroes" and "Lodger"
