Nine numbers feature the 1931 version of the State Street Ramblers, which matched together great percussive trombonist Roy Palmer with Darnell Howard (who doubles on alto and clarinet) and has plenty of spirit and drive. In addition there are 13 songs from the Memphis Nighthawks in 1932 and four by the 1936 Chicago Rhythm Kings; both groups are similar in style and also have plenty of space for Roy Palmer's unique playing. A special treat is a previously unreleased trombone-piano duet, "The Trombone Slide. Heartily recommended to collectors of the era.

Roy Palmer had a raspy tone yet a fluid style on the trombone which he played quite percussively (reminiscent but not derivative of Kid Ory ). No matter what the setting, Palmer's playing added excitement, joy and musicality to the situation yet he is largely forgotten today except by 1920's collectors. Palmer started out as a guitarist (playing in Roseal's Orchestra as early as 1906), switched to trumpet and then finally trombone. After 1936, Roy Palmer was no longer a fulltime player, made no further recordings, ran a laundry business and taught trumpet, trombone and theory from his Chicago home.
Works Volume 2 is the sixth studio album by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in 1977. Unlike Works Volume 1 (which consisted of three solo sides and one ensemble side), Works Volume 2 was a single album and it was seemingly a compilation of leftover tracks from other album sessions. While many derided the album for its apparent lack of focus, others felt that it showed a different side of the band, with blues, bluegrass and jazz being very prominent as musical genres in this recording.
