Lilac Wine :: "Lilac Wine" is a song written by James Shelton (words and music) in 1950. It was introduced by Hope Foye in the short-lived theater musical revue, "Dance Me a Song

Helen Merrill (born Jelena Ana Milcetic July 21, 1930) is an American jazz vocalist. Her first album, the eponymous 1955 release Helen Merrill, was an immediate success and associated her with the first generation of bebop jazz musicians. After a prolific 1950s and '60s when she recorded with Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown, Merrill spent time recording and touring in Europe and Japan, falling into obscurity in the United States.

Helen Merrill recorded Lilac Wine with an artistic perspective developed over her 50 year career. It is a profound and mature performance. For her repertoire she selected ballads with impressionist lyrics that allow her to work her alchemy combining; the refined lyrics and melodies, precise control of phrasing and dynamics, expressive orchestral arrangements and sympathetic accompaniment by bass virtuoso George Mraz and Torrie Zito.

On Lilac Wine she performs a set of melancholy ballads that are heartfelt and lightly swung. Accompanied by a large orchestra from Czechoslovakia that is arranged by Torrie Zito, Merrill interprets all of the material at a slow dreamy tempo. The results are subtle, quietly emotional, and atmospheric. The only real change of pace is Marian McPartland 's instrumental "Portrait of Helen Merrill. Otherwise all of the music is taken at the same slow tempo and in a similar mood. Despite the lack of variety, this quiet outing grows in interest with each listen.

Helen Merrill recorded Lilac Wine with an artistic perspective developed over her 50 year career. It is a profound and mature performance. For her repertoire she selected ballads with impressionist lyrics that allow her to work her alchemy combining; the refined lyrics and melodies, precise control of phrasing and dynamics, expressive orchestral arrangements and sympathetic accompaniment by bass virtuoso George Mraz and keyboardist/arranger Torrie Zito. These performances are transcendent and evocative, which to my mind are a musician's highest achievement.
