Jacques Romain Georges Brel (French pronunciation: Pronunciation ; 8 April 1929 – 9 October 1978) was a Belgian singer, songwriter, actor, poet and director who composed and performed literate, thoughtful, and theatrical songs that generated a large, devoted following-initially in Belgium and France, later throughout the world. He is considered a master of the modern chanson

to/AlbumFP 90 years after his birth, 13 artists from different horizons celebrate the great Jacques Brel, through interpretations of his greatest successes.

Jacques Brel’s unshakable faith in his own abilities served him well when all around him were equivocal. Stuck, bored and unfulfilled at the family’s cardboard factory back in Brussels, 24-year-old Brel fled for Paris in September 1953, leaving his wife and young family in Belgium, a temporary arrangement that would remain permanent but for one abortive attempt to relocate them  . Brel was unrepentant, and on his final 1977 album, when at death’s door, he upped the ante with an even ruder song, Les . which accuses the Flemish of having standoffish stares and gormless humour, as well as being Nazis during the war, and Catholics in between.

Jacques Brel was the first French-speaking singer-songwriter to try out film directing. Brel did not know how to write music, so he had his musicians transcribe the songs he composed. The Dutch singer Liesbeth List also released an album of Brel’s songs in Dutch in 1972. This album, called Liesbeth List Zingt Jacques Brel, was so popular in the Netherlands that it won the Disque d’or award. After leaving school, Brel joined the Catholic youth group the Franche Cordée, an organization whose main goal was to do charitable works for the needy. In 1949, Brel even became the group’s President.
