John Gilmore is the quintessential . Sydney Morning Herald. John Gilmore had a life that was to be both envied and avoided. He paints celebrities as he knew them (and wow did he know a lot) From Janis Joplin in the opening chapter to his encounters with Lenny Bruce and his friendship with James Dean and Dennis Hopper, Gilmore paints a Hollywood that some have heard of, however no one dared talk about.

In baring his role in James Dean's attempts to push the bounds of sexual experimentation, Gilmore explores the actor's legendary fascination with speed and death.

John "Jonathan" Gilmore (July 5, 1935 - October 13, 2016) was an American author and gonzo journalist known for iconoclastic Hollywood memoirs, true crime literature and hard-boiled fiction. A motion picture, television and stage actor in Los Angeles and New York in the 1950s, his friends including James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, Gilmore has also written about his encounter with Elizabeth Short . The Black Dahlia" during his youth.

But when someone slipped me John Gilmore’s Laid Bare some years back, curiosity trumped annoyance. The cover was good-an orange duotone of Gilmore’s face with a yellow Futura subtitle: A Memoir of Wrecked Lives and the Hollywood Death Trip. The subjects in Laid Bare-all celebrities and other notables that Gilmore knew in the 50s and 60s-are characters in a kaleidoscopically bad dream about the weirdness and putrescence of fame. Janis Joplin, Hank Williams, Lenny Bruce, Steve McQueen ( almost absolute self-absorption ), Brigitte Bardot, Dennis Hopper, Jean Seberg, Jack Nicholson ( a shadow with gloating eyes ), sensationalized murderers Charles Schmid and Charles Manson, Jane Fonda, Curtis Harrington, and James Dean. Especially James Dean.

The Bride Stripped Bare is a 1978 solo album by Bryan Ferry and is his fifth album released independent of Roxy Music. It was recorded after his girlfriend Jerry Hall left him for Mick Jagger in 1977, and appears to contain references to their break-up. The album peaked at number 13 on the albums chart in the United Kingdom. Although critically acclaimed, the album didn't achieve the success it was expected as it was released in the peak of punk rock.
