Photochemical smog is produced when sunlight dissociates nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere and they react with hydrocarbons. The result is a mixture of chemicals that cause skin, lung and eye irritation, and other health problems. The word smog first appeared in a 1911 report from from the Smoke Abatement League of Great Britain to describe the combination of smoke and fog that killed 1,000 people in Glasgow and Edinburgh in 1909, though it may have been used as early as 1905. The modern world is plagued with a new type of smog.

A period of cold weather, combined with an anticyclone and windless conditions, collected airborne pollutants-mostly arising from the use of coal-to form a thick layer of smog over the city. It lasted from Friday 5 December to Tuesday 9 December 1952, and then dispersed quickly when the weather changed.

The smoke and coal ash could be so thick at this time that it was known to change the color of buildings and even turned 10 Downing Street’s bricks from yellow to black. Trapped under the warm air, the smog became thicker to the point where people couldn’t see across the street, and some others in East London reported that they couldn’t even see their own feet. Visibility at its poorest was done to one foot, and it made driving and simply cross the street practically impossible. In less than a day, London was effectively shut down. London transport stopped completely aside from the Underground since buses couldn’t see where they were going (making the death of Churchill’s fictional secretary one the series’ historical liberties).

Even words such as gas chamber for Delhi were used. And it was not wide off the mark. Due to the increased level of pollution, people are facing many health problems. Smog can create major health risks, including asthma, lung tissue damage, bronchial infections, heart problems, skin disease, hair-fall, burning in the eye, nose, ear, throat, lung infection, possibility of brain stroke to patients of hypertension and lowering of immune system. There may be general trouble in breathing. Vitamin D production is naturally low due to heavy dust/smog, causing people to have rickets (softening and weakening of the bones).

The mysterious Great Smog of London claimed 12,000 lives and its cause went unexplained for more than 60 years. The Great London Smog was so thick it essentially shut the city down. Visibility was reduced to almost nothing, causing residents to abandon their vehicles in the middle of the roads.

It was a bit pricier than my last smog test but the service was prompt, and the mechanic was nice.

When the smog finally lifted, thousands of people were dead. And it would take nearly 65 years for scientists to pinpoint the reason for what has become known as The Great Smog of 1952, one of the deadliest environmental disasters in the history of the world. 5th December 1952: Morning traffic at Blackfriars, London almost at a standstill because of the blanket smog. Amazingly, it wasn't until last year-just a few weeks before The Crown premiered-that a global team of scientists announced that they may have finally solved the mystery of The Great Smog, and published their findings in the November 2016 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Photochemical smog (or just smog for short) is a term used to describe air pollution that is a result of the interaction of sunlight with certain chemicals in the atmosphere. One of the primary components of photochemical smog is ozone. While ozone in the stratosphere protects earth from harmful UV radiation, ozone on the ground is hazardous to human health. Ground-level ozone is formed when vehicle emissions containing nitrogen oxides (primarily from vehicle exhaust) and volatile organic compounds (from paints, solvents, and fuel evaporation) interact in the presence of sunlight

Really, it was yet another smog, it just lasted a lot longer. And the panic didn’t even come until months later when the death tolls came out and they realized that thousands of people died. And even then there wasn’t panic. Even then, when I spoke to all of these people who survived the smog, even Rosemary Sergeant, who had lost her father and it was this incredibly heartbreaking story, they all had the same mantra: this was just part of life in London. And it became something of, well, this is just a byproduct of living in the city.

Smog-Eating Buildings. Air pollution has become a huge issue in many large cities around the world. It is the leading cause of death in the environment, according to the World Health Organization. Smog-eating technology was first manufactured by Elegant Embellishments. The company was founded in 2006 and prioritizes green technology solutions for the biggest problems the world is currently facing. Their most recent development that is being utilized in cities around the world is ‘smog-eating’ building coverings. Smog-Eating Technology. This technology is made by coating honeycomb-shaped tiles with titanium dioxide.
