Raising Hell is a showpiece for Run-DMC’s otherworldly rap skills: The rhymes flow fast and furious, starting with scratch-propelled opener Peter Piper. When they pose the question, How devastating can an MC be? the answer is as obvious as Jam Master Jay’s sharp DJ cuts. The jumpsuit-clad hip-hop pioneers are as adept mixing it up with rock ‘n’ roll ( It’s Tricky ) as asserting cultural consciousness ( Proud to Be Black ) on an album thick with clever jazz-funk samples and the illest 808 kicks and snares.
Although Run DMC and King of Rock were well received, it was their 1986 release Raising Hell that was perhaps the most important and influential album they released, solidifying the groups place in the annals of hip-hop greats and transforming rap from an underground phenomenon into a mainstream success. Having built their style on Run DMC and then improved it on King Of Rock the band were on a high, having slowly gained both commercial success and critical acclaim
Raising Hell (album). Raising Hell was voted the fifth best album of 1986 in the Pazz & Jop, an annual poll of American critics nationwide, published by The Village Voice. "Run-DMC - Raising Hell CD Album". Retrieved 2011-12-02.
Rick Rubin had by this point taken over production from Larry Smith, and he kept the group's thunderous stomp while adding a host of sly sampled musical touches: unbelievably funky bells on "Peter Piper", a great cartoonish piano line on "You Be Illin'", a dirty Southern-rock guitar riff on the title track.

Run-DMC was the first group in the genre to have an album certified gold (Run–D. 1984) and to be nominated for a Grammy Award. They were the first to earn a platinum record (King of Rock, 1985), the first to earn a multi-platinum certification (Raising Hell, 1986), the first to have their music. videos broadcast on MTV, and the first to appear on American Bandstand and the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Run-DMC was the only hip hop act to perform at the . Live Aid concert in 1985. That's why DMC says 'My Adidas only bring good news and they are not used as felon shoes. That embrace of the look and style of the street would define the next 25 years of hip hop fashion. After the success of their first album, Run-DMC looked to branch out on their follow-up.
