Emerging from Montreal’s sprawling electronic scene, the duo - Marie Davidson and Pierre Guerineau– feel completely free to express themselves, to sketch out hitherto unmapped musical regions. Essaie Pas has always been about exploring new territories explains Pierre. From the very first tapes, to the last one. While the music of Essaie Pas, which just wrapped up a European tour, conjures up obscure cold wave (a genre of music characterized by minimal use of electronics and an irreverent tone) groups from France and Belgium that peaked in the late ’70s, Davidson insists that any such similarities aren’t exactly linear. New Path in particular is inspired by Philip K. Dick’s 1977 sci-fi novel A Scanner Darkly. The title of the album is a reference to the drug addiction center in the novel, which Davidson read while they were preparing for their debut on DFA, 2016’s Demain Est Une Autre Nuit, at Guerineau’s behest. Seeing as A Scanner Darkly was published in 1977, you might wonder why it's being revisited now. The fact is that Dick was eons ahead of his time, and the themes he explored are becoming more and more relevant each day. "We found that its subject matter really touched us," Guerineau tells Exclaim! "Addiction, loss, surveillance, paranoia, what . .
