Handel's Coronation Anthems were all written for the same event, the coronation of King George II in 1727. Handel's early Dixit Dominus fares better at the hand of Sir David Willcocks and features the all-star (or at least mostly star) soloist group of Teresa Zylis-Gara, Dame Janet Baker, Martin Lane, Robert Tear, and John Shirley-Quirk. The juxtaposition between these singers and the choir is rather jarring, however.

Handel composed four anthems for the Coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline. At least one of the Anthems has been performed at every Coronation post-1727. With the same chorus and orchestra (Choir of King's College Cambridge and English Chamber Orchestra), Ledger conducts as well as Willcocks. Dixit Dominus', recorded by Willcocks in 1965, is a setting of Psalm 109. This work was composed in Rome in 1707 during Handel's tour of Italy between 1706 and 1710. The Psalm is used for Vespers throughout the year and this setting may have been written for performance at Easter.
