You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise
John Lennon recorded the first version of Power To The People at Ascot Sound Studios on 22 January, the day after the Red Mole interview took place. He played piano, Bobby Keys performed a saxophone part, and female singers gave a gospel flavour to the recording. However, it proved dissatisfactory, and after a reggae-style remake was attempted, he abandoned it until the following month. The sessions were for the single, and also some early work for what would become the Imagine album; other songs recorded during this time included I Don't Want To Be A Soldier and It's So Hard. The basic track for Power To The People was raw and sparse, but in the hands of Phil Spector it was transformed. Spector added swathes of echo and compression, encouraged Bobby Keys to deliver a forceful performance, and recruited enough singers to make a small choir.
