This four-disc Ondine set collects the complete concertos of Einojuhani Rautavaara. While these 12 works may not make the best argument for the Finnish post-modernist's status as a great composer - his eight symphonies surely make good that claim - they certainly make the best argument for his status as an amazingly effective, astoundingly diverse, and wonderfully individualistic composer.

Ondine's Einojuhani Rautavaara album (ODE 1178-2) gets this year's Gramophone Award in the category of contemporary music. The winning recording features Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor John Storgårds with the soloists Truls Mørk (cello) and Colin Currie (percussion). The album includes Rautavaara's two latest concertos, Incantations for percussion and Towards the Horizon for cello. In addition, the CD presents an orchestral work Modificata (1957/2003), a fine example of the early Serialist composition techniques.

Finnish composer noted for the birdsong of his Cantus Arcticus and his works featuring images of angels. In the course of a long compositional career, the defining feature of the music of the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara, who has died at the age of 87, was its stylistic adaptability. The distinctive Rautavaara soundworld familiar from his later, internationally successful works evolved only gradually, achieving its fully recognisable form in the 1980s
