The album contains a second song about MLK called MLK! It got so much airplay on MTV at that time and is still one of those typical 80s videos. The original video was made by Anton Corbijn but was rejected by MTV by good reasons. This song is about Mafia and their mass-slaughtering and takeover of planet Earth. Kyle from Portage, MiThis song is about Jesus Christ, who came and died in the name of love and for the sake of our salvation, and all of His followers who died for spreading that love to the world. Martin Luther King J. whom the entire third verse is about, is one of those followers. The word "pride" in the title is not the selfish, egotistical kind of pride. It is the pride defined as "the better or most superior part of something".
Subsequent work such as their first UK number-one album, War (1983), and the singles "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "Pride (In the Name of Love)" helped establish U2's reputation as a politically and socially conscious group. By the mid-1980s, they had become renowned globally for their live act, highlighted by their performance at Live Aid in 1985. Facing creative stagnation and a backlash following their documentary/double album, Rattle and Hum (1988), U2 reinvented themselves in the 1990s through a new musical direction and public image.
One man come in the name of love One man come and go. One man come here to justify One man to overthrow. One man caught on a barbed wire fence One man he resist One man washed up on an empty beach One man betrayed with a kiss. In the name of love What more in the name of love. Early morning, April four Shot rings out in the Memphis sky. Free at last, they took your life They could not take your pride
On the occasion of the release of U2’s 14th studio album, Songs of Experience, it is worth noting how remarkable it actually is that this band has remained a going concern for over 40 years, since Larry Mullen Jr. put up a notice at Mount Temple Comprehensive School: Drummer seeks musicians to form band. U2 is, at this point, the only rock band of its stature that still has its original lineup. No one has overdosed, no one’s been fired, and no one’s left the group in pursuit of a solo career.
The lyrical approach of the album was greatly inspired by Irish poet, novelist and Trinity College, Dublin Professor Emeritus Brendan Kennelly’s advice to Bono to write as if you’re dead’, resulting in a collection of songs in the form of intimate letters to places and people close to the singer’s heart - family, friends, fans, himself. The store clerk asked me what the song was called. My guess was "In the Name of Love. The record store guy was delighted; he knew the song, he said.
