For those who enjoy instrumental post-rock, God is an Astronaut will become a firm favourite in your collection, if they aren't already. Released in 2007, Far From Refuge is a beautifully crafted album, and an incredible set of songs to relax to. As a five piece, you'll still find the standard rock ensemble (minus the vocalist of course), however the way these guys play creates an epic and multi-layered sound. Tracks like "Tempus Horizon" demonstrate the band's skill at building on a song, gently pulling the listener into the soundscape, adding layer upon layer until the ultimate climax, where God is an Astronaut really prove that emotion is not just for pretty words.
As beautiful as the album often is, it is no masterpiece. The songs are tightly arranged, well performed, and emotionally evocative, but extremely derivative and occasionally sappy. this is a solid album, but it's such a step down from all is violent that it was an inevitable disappointment.
