Alban Berg String Quartet. Isabel Charisius Gerhard Schulz Günter Pichler Thomas Kakuska Valentin Erben. Founded in 1971, the Alban Berg Quartet was one of the finest string quartets in the world during its 37-year existence. Stravinsky, Haubenstock-Ramati, Von Einem: String Quartets. EMI Music Distribution.

The Alban Berg Quartett was a string quartet founded in Vienna, Austria in 1970, named after Alban Berg. The Berg Quartet was founded in 1970 by four young professors of the Vienna Academy of Music, and made its debut in the Vienna Konzerthaus in autumn 1971. The widow of the composer Alban Berg, Helene, attended an early private concert after which she gave her consent for the quartet to use her husband's name.

THE ALBAN BERG QUARTETT AND THE TAKACS QUARTET The Alban Berg Quartett performances are superb, and the recording quality is excellent. Their interpretation is more traditional than the Takacs Quartet, which plays in the gypsy style of the Vegh Quartet, rough, earthy, and fiery by turns, heavier, thicker, and more passionate than many non-Hungarian interpretations. The Takacs Quartet recording features amazing separation and clarity of the four instruments, including the cello with a strong bottom. It would be work to find a better rendition than this economical set, a reissue of the classic Streichquartette (Str Qrts). The Alban Berg Quartett offer a beautiful and engaging rendition of Bartók's 6 String Quartets. These works have an intense, lavish, modern Viennese sound, free of sterile theoretical exercise, rather than the Hungarian sound that is often typical of Bartók.
