The discography of Sam Cooke, an African-American recording artist, singer-songwriter and entrepreneur, consists of fifteen studio albums (including one collaborative album and two notable posthumous releases), two live albums, and numerous compilations. Over the course of his eight-year career, Cooke placed 29 singles in the Top 40 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. He also placed 20 singles in the Top Ten of Billboard's R&B chart, Black Singles chart.
The problem with issuing compilations of Sam Cooke material is one of licensing, since his early gospel work with the Soul Stirrers is owned chiefly by Specialty Records; his first secular pop hits like "You Send Me," "(What A) Wonderful World," and "Only Sixteen" are owned by Keen Records; his middle pop period and songs like "Chain Gang," "Cupid," "Twistin' the Night Away

Sam Cooke was certainly the "father of soul" for me. i was not quite prepared for the nostalgic journey this music took me. High school dances, juke boxes, hanging out at the beach,, cruising around town. Songs I knew the words to and sang. The liner notes, by Cooke biographer Peter Guralnick, provide a lot of information in relatively little space, and there's even a list of musicians on most of the RCA sessions. I couldn't recommend this collection more.
Gospel drove Sam Cooke through his greatest songs, the same way it did for Ray Charles, who came first, and Otis Redding. He had an incomparable voice. Sam Cooke could sing anything and make it work. But when you're talking about his strength as a singer, range is not relevant. It was his power to deliver - it was about his phrasing, the totality of his singing. It's just a well-crafted song with a great lyric and melody.
