Orchestra: L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Conductor: Ernst Ansermet. Composer: Maurice Ravel, Arthur Honegger, Claude Debussy, Paul Dukas, Emmanuel Chabrier. Audio CD (July 15, 1997). This was a kind "beau geste" of Ansermet for Honeger 's special dedication. In Ravel 's Bolero and La Valse I have to underline the existence of the anthological performances of Victor de Sabata in 1950 that literally have been unsurpassable to the present. Chabrier's Spain may be the best option in the market. And finally Ansermet has an unique performance that beats it: Toscanini NBC, but if you disagree with the orchestral violence in the last movement, this should be your second option

Thus Decca initially issued the two poèmes dansés together, and reserved L’apprenti sorcier for an ‘Ansermet Orchestral Concert’, coupling it with La Valse and Boléro of Ravel, and Pacific 231 by the conductor’s fellow countryman, Arthur Honegger. By 1957, Ansermet had been conducting this music for almost half a century. Debussy never repeated himself,’ he remarked in an interview with Peter Heyworth in 1962. In his music the work itself, the inspiration, creates the form

The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (OSR) is a Swiss symphony orchestra, based in Geneva at the Victoria Hall. In addition to symphony concerts, the OSR performs as the opera orchestra in productions at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. Ernest Ansermet founded the OSR in 1918, together with Paul Lachenal, with a contingent of 48 players and a season of six months' duration. Besides Swiss musicians, the OSR players initially came from other countries, including Austria, France, Germany and Italy.
