This discovery in the radio archives of a Tannhauser from the first of the subsequent performances to a less-than-optimal initial performance is a real find, and is here released on CD in the series of historical recordings of the Bayreuth Festival. Not being an expert by any means on Wagner's most boring opera, I can only give a few personal opinions: Sawallisch conducts a fine orchestra with the same vitality that he would for his Philips recordings the following year, and Wilhelm Pitz chorus likewise is near the same level for those famous performances.

Conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch admirably negotiates the work’s at times deliberately blurred dividing line between spiritual and sexual experience, though he’s not as extreme as some interpreters – ironic given that the Wieland Wagner production from which this was taken was deemed pornographic at the time. The mono sound is warm and crystal clear. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

Tannhäuser, is an 1845 opera in three acts, music and text by Richard Wagner, (WWV 70 in the catalogue of the composer's works) based on two German legends: Tannhäuser, the legendary medieval German Minnesänger and poet, and the tale of the Wartburg Song Contest. The story centers on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love, a theme running through much of Wagner's mature work.
