Levert was born to The O'Jays frontman Eddie Levert and his wife Martha in Philadelphia on July 13, 1966. He grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. Due to his father's career, Levert would travel with the band regularly. The book was initially planned as a tie-in for a Levert album of the same name. Edward Willis "Eddie" Levert (born June 16, 1942) is an American singer–songwriter and actor. Levert is best known as the lead vocalist of the group, The O'Jays. Levert was born in Bessemer, Alabama, but was raised in Canton, Ohio, where he moved to at the age of 6. He attended church regularly and eventually joined the church choir. As Levert continued singing into his teenage years, he became a recognized voice in the church choir, sang in school plays and performed regularly on a gospel radio show.

Father and Son is the first full-length collaboration between Gerald and Eddie LeVert, two singers who have sustained their popularity throughout the changing climate of soul and R&B for over two decades. Appropriately, the album falls into the middle ground between the heart-stopping, smooth soul of Eddie's group, the O'Jays, and the slicker, funkier LeVert, which featured Gerald.

Gerald Levert (July 13 1966 - November 10 2006) was an rhythm and blues singer, one of several from the musical Levert family. His father, Eddie Levert, is the lead singer of the 1970s soul group The O'Jays. Gerald Levert sang with his brother, Sean Levert, and Marc Gordon in the R&B trio LeVert. He was also a member of LSG, an R&B trio also featuring Johnny Gill and Keith Sweat.
