Rough and Ready is the third album by The Jeff Beck Group and the first of two by the second Jeff Beck Group. Released in 1971, it featured more of a jazz, soul and R&B edge to counter Beck's lead guitar. As a songwriter, Beck contributed more pieces to Rough and Ready than he had before, or ever would again. Beck enlisted Bobby Tench as vocalist and it is also the first time keyboardist Max Middleton is heard. Other members of this line up are drummer Cozy Powell and bassist Clive Chaman.
Traditionally Beck's second group is overlooked and even often a bit derided by fans (casual or confirmed), which I find tremendously unjust, because this group actually rocked quite hard . One of them was this "Rough and Ready" album, with a more Heavy Rock sound. His new band included the now late drummer Cozy Powell (who was becoming a very known and respected drummer then), lead singer Bob Tench (more oriented to Blues music in style, I think), bassist Clive Chaman, and one musician who later became a long time collaborator for Beck in the seventies, keyboard player Max Middleton.

Recouping after a car crash and faced with the loss of Rod Stewart and Ron Wood, Jeff Beck redefined what the Jeff Beck Group was about, deciding to tone down the bluesy bombast, adding keyboardist Max Middleton for a jazz edge, then having Bob Tench sing to give it an overblown early-'70s AOR edge. As expected, these two sides are in conflict and Tench can be a little overbearing, but there are moments here that bring out the best in Beck.

Only a few months after the second incarnation of the Jeff Beck Group had released their first album, Beck and friends were (rough and) ready to record again. The band had revealed itself as a more R&B-oriented combo – as opposed to the metallic blues of the Rod Stewart-fronted group – and planned to tap into some Stax soul on the next LP. One of Beck's guitar heroes was Booker T. and the . s axe man and Stax house guitarist Steve Cropper, who agreed to produce what would become 1972's self-titled Jeff Beck Group album . For 1971's Rough and Ready, Beck had taken the time to craft a batch of original tunes.
