The inaugural Glyndebourne Festival Opera ran over six weeks in summer 1934. It opened with a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro featuring Audrey Mildmay as Susanna. Famous German conductor Fritz Busch served as the festival’s music director, and German actor, stage director and arts administrator Carl Ebert was the artistic director. The festival has been organized by the Christies ever since, except for the years 1941–1945 (because of the Second World War) and 1993 (due to the construction of a new theater in Glyndebourne)

The second Beaumarchais play in the ‘Figaro Trilogy’ appears at the 2016 Festival with the return of Michael Grandage’s 2012 production of Le nozze di Figaro. The revival features Glyndebourne debuts by South African soprano Golda Schultz as Countess Almaviva and Italian baritone Davide Luciano as Figaro. Italian soprano Rosa Feola, who made a memorable Glyndebourne debut as Sandrina in La finta giardiniera in the 2014 Glyndebourne Tour, will play Susanna for her first Festival appearance.

I have always thought The Marriage Of Figaro, premiered in 1786, is one opera that does not take to updating. Inspired by the Beaumarchais play that heralded the coming of the French Revolution, the plot hinges on whether the Count will revive the ancient droit de seigneur whereby he has the feudal right to the first night with a bride. The cast works beautifully as a team although Vito Priante’s Figaro is rather low key. Lydia Teuscher is a lively Susanna, delivering an exquisitely seductive aria to ensnare the Count in the garden scene. Sally Matthews as the Countess gives us a peerless Dov’e sono? where she ponders her unhappy marriage. Isabel Leonard makes a sparkling debut as troubled adolescent Cherubino, unsure who he is in love with and a thorn in the Count’s side.
