Wise Up Ghost is a collaborative studio album by British singer/songwriter Elvis Costello and American hip hop group The Roots. The album was released on September 17, 2013, by Blue Note Records. The album's first single "Walk Us Uptown" was released on July 23, 2013. Growing out of Costello's appearances on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, where the Roots are the house band, Wise Up Ghost was well-received by professional critics.

First catalog number on front cover, second catalog number on spine.

That Costello's lyrical approach automatically invites comparison with the past is occasionally the album's undoing. Stick Out Your Tongue is a languid retooling of 1983's Pills and Soap, perhaps the most cryptic of his livid Thatcher-era state of the nation addresses: it's hard to get around the fact that the new version doesn't have the same menacing drama as the original, which is unfortunate, given that the overall message of the song appears to. be that nothing has really changed in the intervening 30 years.

Elvis Costello & the Roots. Release Date: Sep 17, 2013 Record label: Blue Note Genre(s): Pop/Rock, Adult Alternative Pop/Rock, Alternative/Indie Rock, Alternative Pop/Rock, Contemporary Pop/Rock, College Rock. Such is the case on Wise Up Ghost, on which the Roots play Elvis Costello's backing band. The partnership underpins the most overtly cool iteration of Costello's disaffected delivery in years, if not decades.

Wise Up Ghost and Other Songs. Summary: Originally begun as an album of reworked Costello songs, the debut collaboration between Elvis Costello and the Roots is instead a largely original release produced by Steven Mandel. 40. Wise Up Ghost, more compelling in theory than practice.

Wise Up Ghost revisits Costello’s section of the record store by sampling some of his earlier songs, and setting the lyrics of others to new melodies. Invasion Hit Parade, from his Mighty Like a Rose (1991), becomes Refuse to Be Saved ; Pills and Soap, from Punch the Clock (1983), becomes Stick Out Your Tongue. It says something about how acute Costello’s observations were when older, topical lyrics from two or three decades ago can still pack a punch. The Roots have proved their versatility as the house band on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and they serve Costello well here. Wise Up Ghost is a good Elvis Costello album, but not one that inspires a similar reassessment. Questlove, however, is extraordinary.

Only 2 left in stock (more on the way). Long-rumored and shrouded in mystery, this collaborative album between Elvis Costello and The Roots promises to be one of the most unexpected and surprising releases of 2013. Definitely a situation where the whole is greater than the sum of the amazing parts, this album lives up to all of the intrigue and expectations. Other stand-out tracks include "Wake Me Up," with an insistent funky groove, "Come the Meantimes," "Wise Up Ghost," and the poignant ballad "If I Could Believe," which is stripped back to just Costello's voice with a piano trio. Two of the three bonus tracks on the Deluxe version are also among the best - "My New Haunt" and "Can You Hear Me?" - so definitely pick it up rather than the standard version.

Wise Up Ghost' isn't a revolutionary record, not even by Costello's standards. The Roots - one of the finest live bands in America - bend more to the Englishman than he does to them. It sounds like a Costello album and falls in line with his most recent records - 2009 and 2010's Nashville excursions 'Secret, Profane & Sugar Cane' and 'National Ransom,' the 2006 album he made with New Orleans great Allen Toussaint, 'The River in Reverse. It's just another stop on his tour of American music. The rhythms nudge him along on songs like the opening 'Walk Us Uptown,' the sweet-thick 'Wake Me Up' and 'Stick Out Your Tongue,' which reworks his 1983 cut 'Pills and Soap.
