Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Leonard Slatkin, Edo de Waart. Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. Recorded: 1985-01-01. Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein were two outstanding American composers who both contributed hugely to the musical scene in the USA. Both wrote ballets that broke new ground: Copland on themes that echoed the vast and lonely expanses of the American prairies, and Bernstein on the hectic life in New York in the middle of the 20th century. This album presents complete performances of Copland’s Billy the Kid and Appalachian Spring and Bernstein’s Fancy Free and Facsimile, as well as extracts from other works including Bernstein’s powerful Symphonic Dances from his smash hit musical West Side.

Symphony No. 3 was Aaron Copland's third and final symphony, its premiere performance taking place on October 18, 1946, by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Serge Koussevitsky. Woodwinds start the first movement followed by strings. The tune which starts the symphony is reminiscent of the American landscape and spirit. Album is focused and awesome and Copland with a definitive recording by legendary Bernstein. Who could ask for anything more? Well, except a redo of 2016, amirite?

It was written between 1944 and 1946, and its first performance took place on October 18, 1946, the Boston Symphony Orchestra performing under Serge Koussevitzky. If the early Dance Symphony is included in the count, it is actually Copland's fourth symphony

As much as anyone, Aaron Copland established American concert music through his compositions, polemics, promotions, and just plain hard work. He belongs to a generation of composers – along with Virgil Thomson, Roy Harris, and Walter Piston – which not only raised our native music to a thoroughly professional level, but put it on an equal footing with contemporary developments in European modernism. As Igor Stravinsky once remarked, "Why call Copland a great American composer? He's a great composer. Copland's music, after his juvenalia, falls into three large periods.
