Notes
Field Recordings of Allan LomaxSeventeen "songs of outlaws and desperadoes," recorded by Lomax with a wide variety of Southern performers, Black and White. The themes of murder, violence, and running from the law have been perennial themes in the folk music of all cultures. This collection has versions of a few fairly well-known songs in this vein ("John Henry," "Pretty Polly," "Po' Lazarus"), though most are more obscure.

One of the most important groups in the history of American music, the Carter Family, with various family members, was active off and on for over seventy years. In early August 1927, Victor talent scout Ralph Peer advertised in a Bristol, Tennessee, newspaper for musicians to come to an audition. These Bristol Sessions were responsible for the discovery of the Carters and Jimmie Rodgers (The Singing Brakeman), the two most important recording artists in early country music. Southern Journey, Vol. 1: Voices From The American South - Blues, Ballads, Hymns, Reels, Shouts, Chanteys And Work Songs. Southern Journey, Vol. 6: Sheep, Sheep, Don'tcha Know The Road? - Southern Music, Sacred And Sinful. 5: Bad Man Ballads - Songs Of Outlaws And Desperadoes. I love the Southern Journey series, and this particular volume is heavily into blues. The first field recordings, actually the first recordings ever, of Fred McDowell alone make this essential listening. For anyone with more than a passing interest in country delta blues this cd is essential. The spirituals and work songs are absolute magic. This is the real deal, not something dreamed up in a recording studio.
