English singer George Michael released five studio albums, two compilation albums, one extended play, 47 singles, three promotional singles, 31 music videos and five video albums. In his career, Michael sold over 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling artists of all time. Michael's debut solo album, Faith, was released by Epic Records in the United Kingdom in October 1987.
George Michael photographed in 1987. George Michael: Why He Turned His Back on Fame, and the 'Faith'-like Songs He Recorded Before His Death. George Michael had two strong recurring premonitions. The first was that he’d be famous. The second was that he’d die young. He wrote, arranged and produced 1987’s Faith; the album sold 25 million copies worldwide and 10 million in the United States, where four of its singles went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, leading to a Grammy for album of the year. Michael, certain he would lose to Tracy Chapman or Sting, didn’t attend. Kahane, who teased the singer like he was a little brother, called him and said, Listen, idiot, you won. ) Michael made all the music decisions, and all the business decisions, too. Being a control freak is f-ing exhausting, he told me.
George Michael, who has died aged 53 of heart failure, was Britain’s biggest pop star of the 1980s, first with the pop duo Wham! and then as a solo artist. After Wham! made their initial chart breakthrough with the single Young Guns (Go for It) in 1982, Michael’s songwriting gift brought them giant hits including Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and I’m Your Man, and they became leading lights of the 80s boom in British pop music, alongside Culture Club and Duran Duran . Music from the Edge of Heaven (1986) was the final Wham! album, and The Edge of Heaven their farewell single. In 1988 Michael set out on a world tour, which was a major commercial success but left him feeling exhausted, isolated and dubious about the entire rigmarole of superstardom.
George Michael, the creamy-voiced English songwriter who sold tens of millions of albums as a member of the duo Wham! and on his own, was found dead on Sunday at his home in Goring in Oxfordshire, England. He was 53. A police statement said: Thames Valley Police were called to a property in Goring-on-Thames shortly before 2 . Faith, which hinted at both gospel and rockabilly, reached No. 1, and the album included three more No. 1 hits: Father Figure, Monkey and One More Try. It has sold more than 10 million copies in the United States. But for his next album, Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, released in 1990, Mr. Michael set out to jettison his pop persona. I’m not stupid enough to think I can deal with another 10 or 15 years of major exposure, he told an interviewer at the time.
Michael arranged and produced the album himself, and the familiarity of many of these songs can obscure his skills in those departments - close listening reveals his knack for shifting elements in and out of the mix and adding subtle embellishments when a little emphasis or variety is needed. Though Faith couldn't completely shake Michael's bubblegum image in some quarters, the album's themes were decidedly adult.
