Of all the things that could be deemed ersatz – a German word for ‘substitute’ used mockingly by British POWs in WWII for the piss-poor imitations of bread and coffee they received in captivity – The Fall are not among them. Like 2010’s ‘Your Future Our Clutter’, ‘Ersatz GB’ sees Smith and co perpetually moving forwards. But then, there’s really only one salient truth about ‘Ersatz GB’ – that The Fall, even at nearly 30 albums old, still stand alone and aloft. Sometimes, however much you meddle with the ingredients, you can’t improve upon the original.

Renowned for their merry-go-round of lineups, seminal post-punk outfit the Fall are arguably entering the most stable phase of their 35-year career, with iconic frontman Mark E. Smith somehow managing to hold onto the same bunch of musicians for a third consecutive album. However, despite their rather unfamiliar solid foundations, their first release through Cherry Red Records, Ersatz . proves they're still as unashamedly chaotic, hyperactive, and downright shambolic as they've ever been.
Album · 2012 · 10 Songs. By official count The Fall’s 29th studio album, Ersatz . is another solid collection of Mark E. Smith ramblings. Who else would write a nasty tune and name it Greenway after his band's current guitarist, Peter Greenway? Smith sounds particularly agitated as he recounts a series of mishaps regarding a band that's been nicking his sound, while the band grinds close to metallic.

Ersatz GB, by contrast, continues to further The Fall's 30 year legacy (there's that unwanted cult status for you), precisely because that band, and Mark E Smith, are all about saying "no". This is not his band, no mere vanity project as Lulu is. This is not anyone's band - this is The Fall, and Mark E Smith is the curator. It felt murky, scant of vim. Domino Records, who released last album Your Future, Our Clutter, reportedly placed unaccustomed constraints on Smith. What Domino Wants, Domino Shall Have" it was proclaimed, sarcastically, while one lyric ran "a new way of recording, a chain around the neck". Perhaps freedom, and a new deal with Cherry Red, had allowed for a lack of focus?

Ersatz GB marks the first time in the history of The Fall that the group have released three consecutive studio albums recorded with the same line-up. Ersatz GB was recorded partially in London with lead singer Mark E. Smith 's vocals being recorded at ToeRag Studios in Hackney and partially in Berlin. It features the same group lineup as its two immediate predecessors, Imperial Wax Solvent (2008) and Your Future Our Clutter (2010), establishing the current lineup as unusually stable by The Fall's standards.
