Miroslav Vitouš Group is an album by Czech bassist Miroslav Vitouš recorded in 1980 and released on the ECM label. And it's good, too-exceptionally good, in fact.
Miroslav Vitous was the founding bassist in Weather Report, a band that by its end, had traveled very far from its roots. But it is indeed that band's musical foundation that interests Vitous here on his tribute to that musical, freedom-seeking egalitarian spirit that was evidenced so profoundly on its 1971 debut album and I Sing the Body Electric. This album is a reminder that the way of playing discovered at this time pointed toward a future music yet to be fully realized. Now it is time for it to come upfront: there is no other way to go, if you wasn't to progress towards musical freedom and a universal concept of equal sharing.
Founder-member Vitous might be remembering Weather Report but he doesn't do any of their tunes, preferring a rather noodly free jazz, a cover of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" and his own bowed and plucked playing. The quintet, featuring Michel Portal on bass clarinet, interrogates Vitous's idea of Slavic soul but, unlike his Universal Syncopations albums, everything is dominated by the bass. WR's Live in Tokyo is the one to get. More about.

Only for completionists (0%). Miroslav Vitous is known for many as co-founder of Weather Report. He played with the band first three years and gone when WR turned to more funk/commercial direction. After he played jazz with Corea,Stanley Clarke, released some albums on ECM. After his many years with interest to electric/electronic sound, he returned back to acoustic bass there. I've seen similar program as recorded on this album playing live by duo of Vitous and his regular collaborator Swiss trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti a year before this album was released. To be honest, I wasn't impressed too much that time.
