Margot & The Nuclear So And So's - Rot Gut, Domestic album download
Margot & the Nuclear So and So's is an American rock band from Indianapolis, Indiana. Between 2006 and 2014, the band released 6 full-length albums. The band's founding members, Richard Edwards and Andy Fry, met while teens. Eventually, in 2004, the two formed Margot & the Nuclear So and So's, named after the character Margot in Wes Anderson's 2001 film The Royal Tenenbaums.
On their fourth album, Rot Gut, Domestic (fifth if you include Not Animal as an album instead of a companion piece to its preferred version Animal!) Chicago indie crew Margot and the Nuclear So and So's rough up the chamber pop sound of their previous releases. The band's involvement with Brian Deck and Tim Rutili, each members of both Califone and Red Red Meat, is apparent from the first strains of the trudging "Disease Tobacco Free. Past criticisms of Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s read as follows: They can be too precious and simultaneously morose; they take themselves too seriously; and, according to some sources, they didn’t really start putting out solid material until the 2010 release of their fourth album, Buzzard. While critics have been known to be tough on this perpetually on-the-verge group, Margot and co. have maintained a fan base as loyal as the detractors are harsh.

Rot Gut, Domestic succeeds because its tone is so dark, its bitter lyrics and gravelly guitars completely at home, as if these tales of the lovelorn and self-hating were produced by Jack White with a healthy injection of Black Keys. I'm sure most people who have found the band through that album have been particularly shunned by the heavier tones of Blizzard and Rot Gut. There are some serious distortions and dark moods that will not earn the band too many casual fans.

Chicago indie crew Margot and the Nuclear So and So's rough up the chamber pop sound of their previous releases. The song's fuzzy lope is an updated take on the feedbacky slowcore of '90s bands like Codeine or Red Red Meat themselves. Principle songwriter Richard Edwards toys with different approaches to this overused set of baseline influences. His random howls and interjections of manic laughter on the drunkenly woozy "Shannon" give the song a legitimately uneasy feeling.
Even though the Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s of 2012 barely resemble the delicate introspective craftsmen that wrote The Dust of Retreat, this is still a band in transition. For all of the scuzzy, agitated jams such as ‘Disease Tobacco Free’ and hazy blues songs like ‘Shannon’, there are still fragile ballads to counterbalance the aggression. Rot Gut, Doemstic simply feels like an album, and its cohesion adds to the sense that all of this fuzzy discordance has a point. The lyrics are often indecipherable amidst the distortion, but let’s be honest - sometimes the illusion of something profound can still be an effective motivator. That’s exactly what listeners of this album can expect: cacophonic noise overshadowing the blasting riffs and infectious melodies that make Rot Gut, Domestic seem like something more than hazy, indistinct clatter.
