Le Groupe des six, 1922, painting by Jacques-Émile Blanche. In this painting of eight people, only five of Les Six are represented; Louis Durey was not present. In the center: pianist Marcelle Meyer. On the left, from bottom to top: Germaine Tailleferre, Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, Jean Wiener "Les Six" (pronounced ) is a name given to a group of six French composers who worked in Montparnasse.

Darius Milhaud Composer. Edouard Exerjean (pf). Germaine Tailleferre Composer. Of the nine musical numbers, Honegger and Milhaud wrote one, Poulenc and Tailleferre two, and Auric three, but the booklet (though not the jewel-case) attributes two of the latter's to Milhaud. It is idle to claim that this music has much intrinsic interest. Poulenc rarely disappoints, but his ''Discours du general'' (No. 4) is an empty little thing lasting less than a minute and followed by twice that much speech, while in No. 5, again by him, two minutes of music leads to five of vociferation.

She studied piano with her mother at home, composing short works of her own, after which she began studying at the Paris Conservatory where she met Louis Durey, Francis Poulenc, Darius Milhaud, Georges Auric, and Arthur Honegger. Among them were Auric, Durey, Honegger, Darius Milhaud and Germaine Tailleferre who, with Poulenc, became known collectively as "Les Six". Durey communicated with his colleague, Darius Milhaud, and asked him to contribute a piano piece that would bring together the six composers who, in 1920 were dubbed Les Six. This joint project was L'Album des Six. Despite the acclaim they received, Durey did not participate in the group's 1921 collaborative work Les mariés de la tour Eiffel, a decision which was a source of great irritation to Jean Cocteau. After the Les Six period, Durey continued with his career. Never feeling the need to belong to the musical establishment, he voiced his growing left-wing ideals that put him in an artistic isolation that lasted for the rest of his life. Following the break with Cocteau, Durey withdrew to his home in Saint-Tropez, Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, in the south of France.
